On one hand you have Tom Selleck bringing that calm to the character of Stephen but also making him the sort of father who for all his laid back nature has a certain ethic about him which he wants others to gain for themselves. And then there is Maggie Grace who goes to town on make Dulcie the rebellious bad girl who is likely to lead people astray rather than calm herself down and grow up. The child has a rare genetic ailment and only survives a few days, but in the meantime Leah has bailed on farm life and told Stephen that she regrets that she ever met him — and Dulcie departs the Idaho farm community on schedule but turns out to be listless and uninvolved in her old life. However, he soon witnesses Dulcie's bizarre and destructive behavior. Well thanks to Maggie Grace her character Dulcie is a full on bad girl who we not only see chopping off her hair with a pen knife and getting a tattoo but when she is hugging her mum to say bye she menacingly tells her that she hates her. Dulcie and Roxanne form a friendship, and with the time spent over the summer, grows closer to her father, and the wounds between all three are healed.

At first Stephen thinks his overwhelmed ex-wife, Angela Wendy Crewson , whom he still misses, has exaggerated Dulcie's troubles. It makes for an interesting mixing pot of drama as we also have Stephen and Leah's fledgling relationship and even a Christian youth group which is important to many in the area, with the religion playing a prominent part in this drama. But the movie hinges on troubled teen Dulcie, who overacts through the film with tantrums and provocations that are never really explained and that don't seem to fit the quiet thoughtfulness of everyone else in the picture. As time passes, Dulcie begins to thrive in her new surroundings, and her growing bond with Stephen creates an unforeseen opportunity for her family to finally address and heal the wounds of the past. Despite her intense misgivings about staying at the farm, Dulcie finds herself forming an unlikely friendship with the sweet, though impressionable Roxanne - and Roxanne's new boyfriend, Will, the religious 17-year-old son of Stephen's friends and farmer neighbors, Asa and Henrietta. Central protagonist Dulcie is a troubled girl who taunts, provokes, and mocks to test boundaries but eventually finds meaning in her life. There are moments where the acting is solid, Crewson and Selleck as a divorced couple resonate, and some of the quieter but more authentic moments of life on the farm have a picturesque beauty. Other adults are engaged and present; most of the teenagers are presented as hardworking and honest.
Soon Dulcie makes friends with Dad's new girlfriend's daughter, Roxanne, learns to help around the farm, and begins to figure out how to give more meaning to her life. Dad is patient and caring; Mom wants what's best for her teenage daughter.
