Driving It There is nothing about the 2013 Mazda Miata convertible that we don't like. For 2013, the convertible again comes with a standard manual-folding soft-top and an available power-retractable hardtop. The Club trim is new; it replaces the midlevel Touring model, between the Sport and Grand Touring.
The Touring trim is now called Club. Toys are supposed to be entertaining, and the Miata is a blast. And much of that has been engineered into the car. Based on price, its closest challengers are a bit larger, with room for more passengers; they include the Fiat 500C, the Mini Cooper convertible and the Volkswagen Beetle convertible. This tiny, two-seat convertible has few competitors.
In fact, top-down is the only way to drive this car. Is it loaded with horsepower? From the lovely quick-shifting manual transmission to the near-instantaneous steering turn-in response, the Miata is a true enthusiast driver's dream. One aspect of this car that Mazda did extremely well is the power hardtop. A five-speed manual is standard in the base Miata Sport, and a six-speed automatic is optional in all trims. Elsewhere, the Miata loses some more points in the comfort department.
The mirror-adjustment buttons require an awkward stretch, as does a small storage box behind the driver. For starters, a little too much road comes through in the ride. It has standard front airbags and seat-mounted side-impact airbags. It's just a fun, affordable and reliable roadster that is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of anyone with a beating heart and a valid driver's license.

It goes from claustrophobic to carefree in seconds. The retractable hardtop is offered on Touring or Grand Touring trim levels and adds the power-retractable hardtop with a glass rear window and rear defroster. They sit just behind the shifter, so drinks constantly get bumped in manual versions.
Hood, trunk, front-suspension control arms, rear-suspension uprights and rear brake calipers are all crafted in a material many carmakers seem yet to discover in any meaningful quantities. Flat, controlled cornering makes off-ramps exhilarating, and quick reflexes help it excel at darting though city traffic. Most of the 2013 Mazda Miata's available options are packaged in the trim-level upgrades. I do have to think twice about making any purchase as the cargo space is extremely li. I also fit a few grocery bags back there, but not a full shopping trip for my family.
Show full review Sometimes change is overrated. The Grand Touring adds a black or beige cloth top, automatic air conditioning, leather seating and a Bose audio system. All versions also get a lightly restyled front end this year. As a daily driver, though, it might leave you feeling sore and cramped. It was on the firm and jittery side; even small bumps induced some choppiness. The Miata isn't flashy or fast.
Despite an entry-level price tag, the Mazda Miata Sport for 2013 is comprehensively equipped. Put the top down and all your cares go out the window — actually, the roof. The sleek exterior shares no sheetmetal or parts with the last-generation Miata, but the two look amazingly similar. For a photo gallery, click.
